Since the Joe Strauss Foundation was established, the monies raised from the Joe Strauss Invitational Tournament have allowed us to contribute to many worthwhile activities within Coventry and throughout Rhode Island.


2007 Accomplishments
  • For the twelfth year donated monies to MADD for TeamSpirit, Jr. which is a two-tiered program that offers Rhode Island middle school students in grades 6-8 the opportunity to experience a two and one-half day leadership skill building training seminar. The seminar highlights prevention educational programs, community and school alcohol and drug use assessments, and substance free alternative activities.
  • Four scholarships totaling $2000 were given to Coventry High School seniors in collaboration with the Coventry Teachers Alliance
  • A Donation of $4,900 was given to Coventry Soccer Association for Field Development
  • 4 New 7'x 21' Goals purchased for the Tournament and CSA use.

Prior Accomplishments

  • Donated monies to the Coventry Substance Abuse and Prevention Task Force to print calendars about saying no to alcohol and drugs. A contest was held in all of the Coventry Schools for art work with this central theme, and thirteen winners were selected. These calendars are distributed throughout the school, town and the legislators of Rhode Island
  • Knotty Oak Middle School was given monies towards a program to teach students how to deal with bullies and peer pressure, while raising you own self esteem. Special speakers and trainers were brought in
  • Coventry Middle School Hostage Party-For the third year in a row students were provided a free party while their parents are held hostage and go to work shops on relevant topics. Last year 200 parents and 200 students attended
  • Teen S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting)- Seven week parenting course for parents with teenagers. The course addresses issues with teen drug and alcohol use, including enforcing consequences for use
  • Purchase of vision goggles for the Coventry Police department to use to simulate what it feels like to be intoxicated. This will be used at various demonstrations and fairs throughout the town
  • Sponsorship of the MADD Hatter Tea Party. Proceeds go to ongoing youth education and prevention programs
  • A traveling multimedia show produced by MADD, called Fake ID that focuses on the strength it takes to with stand peer pressure and the fortitude required doing what is right, despite the opinions of others. This was funded by Joe Strauss Foundation and shown at Coventry High School
  • A grant was given to the local MADD Chapter for the TeamSpirit Conference to sponsor Craig Tournquist who motivates and educates young people to stay substance free. It took place at Bryant College in 2001
  • Ty Sels, a nationally recognized motivational and public speaker came to speak at Coventry Middle School. He spoke of the problems of underage drinking. This was sponsored through the tournament proceeds
  • Scholarship monies have been given to middle school students to attend the Youth to Youth Eastern Regional Conference. While making a personal commitment to being alcohol, drug and tobacco free, these teens empower their peers to make choices that impact their future
  • Proceeds from 1999 tournament went to purchase computer CDs, “The Key” produced by MADD. It is an interactive exercise for parents to begin talking to their children about drinking. Each player in the tournament, over 900 were given one of these CDs
  • Provided funding for a video produced in conjunction with the RI Attorney General’s Office entitled, “10 Seconds”, which talks to children about underage drinking and teen violence. The video came in third in a national competition and won a “Tele-Award” for best educational video
  • Proceeds from the 1998 tournament went to the Attorney General’s Task Force to Prevent Violence in Schools to produce a calendar promoting non-violence and was distributed to students throughout the state
  • 800 graduates of driver’s education programs in Coventry received a Soccer Genie key chain as a reminder to “say no” to alcohol.
  • College scholarships to Coventry High School Students totaling $9800
  • Field improvements to Fish Hill Field including the Joe Strauss Fieldhouse and a picnic area
